Mentoring is a professional supportive role, helping individuals understand and achieve their own goals. In a work environment mentoring can cover practical work issues, tasks, relationships, career choices, as well as personal issues.
Clients may have more than one mentor depending upon needs. Someone with internal knowledge of an organisation can be very helpful in understanding personalities, business process and business culture. Someone outside the organisation can offer objectivity and experiences from other industries and organisations.
The development of the relationship, trust and honesty are central to the mentoring process.
Receiving mentoring is one of the greatest gifts I gave myself – the knowledge that someone is truly on your side is a fantastic resource to have. Sometimes we wonder if we deserve a mentor – are we worth enough to the company? This is about acknowledging to yourself that, absolutely, you are worth it.
I have over 20 years experience of mentoring in a corporate environment.
